Val Hoeppner Media and Consulting, LLC helps newsrooms, universities, faculty members, journalists and others in the communications business with mobile, social and digital training and strategy needs.

Custom Digital Media Training – Bringing the latest in video, multimedia, mobile and social media techniques to your newsroom or university.

What I teach:

Video – video storytelling, video editing, social video, mobile video production, video and multimedia strategies for newsrooms.

Social media – social media for journalists, engaging your audience through social media, using the latest social media tools (Periscope, SnapChat), producing silent video from social media platforms.

Mobile – mobile first news strategy, using mobile devices to cover breaking news, apps for mobile journalists and using social media tools to reach a mobile audience.

Multimedia – data visualization, free and cheap data visualization tools, photojournalism and mobile photojournalism, audio reporting and editing, creating short podcasts and multimedia strategy and where to invest your digital, staff and financial resources.

Training can be customized to fit your media company’s needs.

The benefit of in-person training is that a majority of your staff can receive 6-9 hours of training in just two or three days.

Recent clients include: The Houston Chronicle, The San Francisco Chronicle, The Albany Times Union, The Poynter Institute, Schurz Communications, Chattanooga Times Free Press, The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, The Newseum Institute, Native American Journalists Association, Associated Press Sports Editors, Newspapers Canada, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Virginian-Pilot, Miami Herald, WLRN-NPR Miami, Butler University, Prairie View A&M University, New York Press Association, APME NewsTrain and Online Media Campus.

From my clients…

“An inspiring and motivating force for change, Val Hoepnner is the digital shot in the arm traditionally trained journalism instructors need to advance their multi-platform storytelling knowledge and skills. Regardless of where you fall in terms of digital literacy, you will come away from her training sessions with an amplified ability to translate, navigate and teach students the ins and outs of mobile-first newsgathering and storytelling. Her approach is upfront, straightforward and respectful. And even the most seasoned instructors of video storytelling will find her methods for shooting video, recording sound and editing stories valuable. Moreover, as an industry insider, her insights provide a rich resource for academic programs looking to more fully understand and confront the major shifts in the way news is gathered, presented, disseminated, discovered and shared.”

“Val was incredible. She explained things that are scary, simply because they are
both new AND constantly changing (a lethal combination), and somehow renewed my enthusiasm for digital media. I know that MJ and Michael felt the same way. We’re eager to go shoot some videos. We learned stuff that four years at Ernie Pyle didn’t give us. I can only imagine what our readers are going to think once they see our stuff.
As a teacher, Val was worth it.”
